Welcome to Sunrise Christian School Whyalla
Partnering with families and the community to see students in Whyalla shine.
Meet Henry Engelbrecht, our School Principal.
I warmly welcome you to Sunrise Christian School Whyalla. Thank you for taking the time to seek out our school, we are confident that you will love what you find here.
I am a passionate educator and along with our wonderful staff we aim to provide a warm and welcoming family experience that encourages all our students to achieve their best. Our school provides a diverse learning experience which smoothly transitions them from the Early Learning Centre into primary school.
We are constantly striving to be innovative and progressive, and firmly believe in nurturing children to reveal the best of their God given talents. Supporting them and providing continual opportunities at every stage of their school life.
I would love to invite you to come in for morning tea and the opportunity to get to know us and our school, and how we can partner with you in your child’s development.
Kitchen Garden Program
Sunrise Christian School Whyalla offers a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation program which is unique in the area. The Program is implemented with a whole-school approach, engaging the entire school community whilst integrating with the curriculum.
The program gives students the opportunity to plant, grow, cultivate, harvest and then prepare seasonal vegetables. It emphasises the flavours as well as the health benefits of fresh, seasonal, delicious food. Students are able to create dishes which reflect Australian Dietary Guidelines with the produce they grew themselves. The program empowers Kitchen educators to emphasise balance and moderation, and endorse the concept of preparing fruit-based desserts as a ‘sometimes-only’ option.
Pleasurable food education is designed to be fully integrated into the curriculum and learning framework as it offers infinite possibilities to reinforce literacy, numeracy, science, cultural studies and all aspects of environmental sustainability. It also delivers observable social benefits to all children, including those with special needs.
Our School food education encourages critical thinking, teamwork, an understanding of cause and effect, and increased levels of observation. Students develop life skills in the areas of gardening, cooking, meal preparation, nutrition, healthy habits, hygiene etc.
Sunrise Christian School Whyalla provides an educational program which facilitates individual development in an encouraging and family-oriented environment.
From the ELC to year seven, every student is given the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary for the transition to secondary and tertiary education, and achieve their true potential in the wider world.
We approach all the areas of learning, as set in the Australian Curriculum, with the aim of successfully educating your son or daughter to achieve personal excellence and leadership attributes in order to contribute meaningfully towards the society and local community they are a part of.
We encourage our teachers to be a collaborative extension of your home and make the most of those ‘teachable moments’: to train and reinforce right behaviour, and to instil a healthy and rounded worldview.
